A locked phone will not take it.

The eSIM is a second line from a different network. A handset locked to one network refuses that.
In the UK
Ofcom banned selling locked handsets from December 2021. A phone bought here since then comes unlocked. Older phones, and phones bought abroad, may still be locked.
How to check
Ask the network the phone is on. Or try to add the eSIM. If the phone says it is locked, it is locked. We cannot unlock it.
What to do
Ask the network to unlock it, if they still will. Or put the eSIM on a different phone that takes one. Which phones take one.
